Message from Gallant Ho Experiential Learning Centre

The GHELC seminar series offers faculty members valuable information on experiential learning, providing fundamentals of various key components of experiential learning, its practice and implementation. Through these seminars, the benefits for faculty members will be: intellectual stimulation; developing working relationships, especially interdisciplinary relationships; building a greater sense of intellectual community; learning new teaching and research methods; and learning about new opportunities.

The first seminar will be held with the following details:

Abstract
Basic principles of experiential learning will be reviewed and perspectives on experiential learning experiences from faculty, students, and community partners will be provided. Speaker will also share his experience in setting up experiential learning courses and the specific challenges and rewards of experiential learning

About the Speaker
Professor George Tham is the Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. He is also a member of the Senate, Academic Board, Curriculum Development Committee, Steering Committee on 4-Year Undergraduate Curriculum. His interests cover foundation engineering, rock engineering, slope engineering and engineering education. His outstanding achievement in teaching has been recognized in the field and he has been awarded the University Distinguished Teaching Award (Team Award) for the Mingde Projects.

CETL Seminar: Using Feedback to enhance Assessment and structure Student Learning – Feb 6

About the Seminar
We need to assess students for various purposes including certification, which can mean certification of both student learning and even our own teaching. Therefore, both students and faculty can become disillusioned when assessment grades fall below expectations. Feedback can enhance the effectiveness of both our teaching and student learning / grades and has become the subject of increased discussion in Higher Education, as when scores from National Student Surveys (NSS) or student experience questionnaires are analysed institutionally. Even student unions, such as in the UK, have selected feedback as an important area in facilitating student development. Such interest has generated several inquiries on this topic and in this short seminar, participants will examine and discuss a variety of ways that can be used to enhance student learning by the use of feedback and within the context of limited time availability, using examples drawn from disciplinary contexts.

At the end of the workshop, participants would have:
• Identified different types of feedback that can enhance subject learning & student skills
• Analysed when feedback is able to enhance learning and when it is not
• Discussed ways to give feedback to improve student performance and their learning
• Developed a rationale for feedback-supported teaching

About the speaker
Suki has just joined the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning. He comes here from the University of Bath, UK where he designed and taught faculty training courses and workshops as well as conducted other professional development activities for faculty. Prior to that he has taught in the USA and in Sri Lanka where he was Professor of Marine Ecology and from 1997, Founder Director of the Staff Development Centre at University of Colombo. He has served on editorial boards of both marine ecology and faculty development journals and has published extensively in these areas. Suki has been a UK Commonwealth Scholar, a Royal Society Research Fellow, a double Fulbright Senior Fellow and holds International Scholar status in US universities. He has founded the Sri Lanka Association for Improving Higher Education Effectiveness (www.slaihee.org) and the Field Ornithology Group (www.fogsl.net) and holds a doctorate in marine ecology from the UK. Suki was recently awarded the Spirit of ICED award by the International Consortium of Educational Development for leadership in international educational development (http://icedonline.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Suki-citation.pdf).

Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme & Workshop – Jan 25

Applications are invited for the Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme, which was introduced by the Teaching and Learning Quality Committee in 2010-11.

Objectives
The Scheme aims to enhance the scholarship of teaching at the University through enabling academic staff members to share experience and to collaborate on teaching and curriculum development initiatives at reputable universities where excellent pedagogical practices or curriculum innovation are being implemented, and to facilitate reciprocal visits to the University by academic staff of these institutions. The Scheme is a measure also to ensure that our curriculum and pedagogy are benchmarked against international best practice.

Eligibility
All full-time teaching staff with a minimum of two years of service at the University are eligible to apply.

Deadline for Application
Interested colleagues are encouraged to attend the CETL Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme Workshop at January 25, 2013, which will provide an overview of the Scheme and advice on the preparation of the application. All applications and supporting documents should reach Ms. Synthia Chau, Secretary of the Teaching and Learning Quality Committee (c/o Academic Development and Quality Assurance Section of Registry) on or before March 15, 2013. Applicants will be notified of the results in April/May 2013.

Seminar: Using Moodle to Support the Feedback Process – Jan 15

Abstract

The e-learning Pedagogical Support Unit is offering a seminar looking at the pedagogical and logistical features of Moodle that can be leveraged to facilitate the feedback process and ultimately improve the quality of student learning. The seminar will present seven techniques, using Moodle and related technologies. Techniques will range from those that are quick and easy to implement to those which are more complex but result in deeper and more complete feedback.

Abstract
World-wide, leading research-intensive universities are attempting—as never before—to unite research excellence with teaching excellence, especially in undergraduate education. For over 20 years, Stanford University and its Center for Teaching and Learning have been exploring ways to support faculty as effective teachers, to facilitate synergy between research and teaching, to create a strong culture of teaching, to engage even senior and star faculty in undergraduate education, and to increase the rewards for teaching achievement. This presentation will outline and invite discussion around the strategies for support of teaching excellence at research-intensive universities at the institutional, departmental, and individual level.

About the speaker
MICHELE MARINCOVICH, Ph.D., is Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Stanford University. Her major publications, “Effective Practices at Research Universities: The Productive Pairing of Research and Teaching,” (with Constance Cook in A Guide to Faculty Development, 2nd ed., edited by Kay Gillespie, Doug Robertson, and Associates, Jossey-Bass, 2010), “Teaching and Learning in a Research-Intensive University” (in The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: An Evidence-Based Perspective, edited by R. P. Perry and J. C. Smart, Springer Publishing, 2007), The Professional Development of Graduate Teaching Assistants (Anker Publishing, 1998, with Jack Prostko and Frederic Stout), and Disciplinary Differences in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (with Nira Hativa, Volume 64 in the Jossey Bass New Directions in Teaching and Learning Series, 1995) reflect her pioneering work creating effective faculty and TA development programs for the research-intensive university environment. At the Stanford Center since 1977 and director since 1980, her impact has been recognized on campus with the distinguished Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for Outstanding Service to Undergraduate Education and off campus by election as executive director of the Professional and Organizational Development Network for Higher Education and by invitations to speak on campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

About the Seminar
Would you like to get 100% participation in your online discussion activities?  Think how much better the group collaboration would be if all the students contributed!   Speaker Brant Knutzen has been developing a highly engaging and sustainable methodology for conducting online discussions since 2007.  In this seminar he will introduce his new Moodle forum plugin, the Participation Forum, which automatically sets up group discussion areas and then dynamically awards participation points based on student contributions.  Discussion will include intrinsic and extrinsic motivation methods, and how to build high quality learning on a foundation of participation.   Instructors from the recent pilot project will share their experiences teaching using the Participation Forum with over 340 students, including a large (180+) Common Course course.

About the Speaker
Brant Knutzen is the Learning Designer for the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong.  He has been involved in e-learning for 28 years as software developer, website developer, and corporate trainer.  He currently teaches on an MSc Education program relating to e-learning and educational leadership, and provides e-learning support and professional development for teaching staff.  His research areas include the design, implementation and evaluation of highly engaging blended learning environments for schools and higher education.  Current Moodle plugin development projects include the Participation Map: a new way to visually display online discussion activity, and the Participation Forum: which generates a grade based on student posting activity.  See Brant.Knutzen.se for more information.
