CETL Seminar: Adding Realism to Professional Legal Education at the University of Hong Kong: Action, Reaction and Reflection

Abstract
photo_mootcourtLegal education in Asia has been undergoing significant changes to integrate experiential learning models aimed at enhancing learning environments to facilitate interactivity and realism. These have included law clinics, simulation and internships, while also taking advantage of information technology. With support from TDG and TEFS programmes, the speaker piloted a project to add realism to the vocational legal education in Hong Kong through HKU’s PGC in Laws programme (PCLL).  Two ground-breaking initiatives, first of their kinds in Asia, were introduced and involved the Simulated Professional Learning Environment (SimPLE) and Standardized Clients (SCs).  SimPLE introduced a simulation e-Learning platform for transactional learning, placing learners in a professional context simulating their future workplace that involved aggregates of transactions, multiple solution paths, distributed between tools, colleagues, resources, anticipated and unanticipated problems and individual constructions of knowledge and experience. In the Standardized Clients (SCs) initiative, people lay to the law discipline, but trained to present standardized scenarios to students, comment on and assess students’ communicative competence.  The speaker will explain what prompted him to undertake the project, how these initiative were tried out at HKU’s PCLL, what students’ initial responses were and sketch out future plans.

About the Speaker
Mr Wilson Chow, Associate Professor, joined this University in 1995 as the first full-time local teacher in the Department of Professional Legal Education, Faculty of Law. Responsible for the curriculum reform and development in the HKU PCLL since 2001, he spearheaded all related reform proposals and reports over the years. As Head of the Department between 2005 and 2011, he has accumulated extensive, successful experience in team-leading to achieve major goals. Wilson has presented at various international conferences and co-authored a number of journal articles and book chapters on legal education reform.

AAO Workshop: Introduction to Academic Advising @ HKU

Who is this workshop for?

CETL Workshop: Teaching Excellence Award Scheme Workshop

EPSU Moodle Workshops: 11 – 13 Sep

feature-moodleITS and the e-learning Pedagogical Support Unit are offering a series of 3 workshops on enhancing teaching and learning through the use of Moodle. The first part of each workshop will be presented by ITS and will cover the “how to” of the core Moodle features and techniques that will be featured in the pedagogically focused second part of the workshop. There will be time for hands on in the final part of each workshop. The workshops are as follows:

  1. Moodle and Course Content. This workshop will cover uploading files and videos, presentational techniques and how to use Moodle Page and Book
  2. Moodle for Supporting Student Learning. This workshop will cover the Moodle features Choice, Quiz, Lesson and Assignment
  3. Moodle for Creating Interaction. This workshop will cover the Moodle features Forum, Glossary and Wiki

The workshops are scheduled to run for one and half hours will focus first on technology (half an hour) and then on pedagogy (half an hour). There will be time to get hands on with Moodle in the final half hour of each session.

Whilst the workshops have been designed to build on one another, it is not necessary to attend all three workshops.

CETL Workshop: Improving assessment to enhance the quality and productivity of higher education

This workshop helps participants explore how to improve assessment and the quality and productivity of higher education.

Date: Sept 23, 2013 (Mon)

To begin, I review underpinning contexts and concepts, then analyse two case studies that expose key methods and opportunities. To conclude this first portion of the workshop I present a model that institutions and academics can use to implement structured assessment partnerships.

Next, participants are invited to reflect broadly on how they would use the model to improve assessment, to identify the best single change they could make, and to detail what would be required to make this change work.

The workshop concludes by drawing together participants’ proposals, evaluating the value and feasibility of each, and drawing broader conclusions about how such effort can improve higher education.

Concluding remarks focus on work underway to impel change in this area, such as international transparency initiatives, the development of assessment resources and services, and building professional capacity and community.

CETL Seminar: Using learning technologies to engage students in campus-based higher education

This seminar discusses rationales and approaches for using learning technologies on campus to engineer an engaged student experience. It begins by exploring contemporary forces shaping campus-based higher education, looking in particular at the influence of learning technologies. I then unpack the concept of student engagement, drawing on theories and findings from a decade of large-scale research in Australia and abroad. I conclude with suggestions for how academic and support staff can use learning technologies to enhance students’ engagement in campus-based higher education.

ITS Orientations for New Staff

8619731692_2382cf2b21_cIn order to provide new University staff with useful information about the wide range of services offered by Information Technology Services (ITS), we will have a series of orientation activities running between late August and mid September:

  2. ITS Orientation Trails
  3. Exhibition Booths

1. ITS Orientation Seminars

New colleagues are encouraged to join an ITS Orientation seminar on one of the following dates:

August 29, 2013 (Thu) 10:30 am – 12:45 pm
August 30, 2013 (Fri) 10:30 am – 12:45 pm
September 4, 2013 (Wed) 2:30 pm – 4:35 pm

Each seminar will include a one-hour “Introduction to Information Technology Services (ITS)” which gives an overview of the comprehensive range of central IT and network services offered by ITS.  In addition to the introductory session, a short presentation will also be given by Dr Iain Doherty about the role of the EPSU in supporting teachers who want to innovate in their courses through the use of e-learning.  Colleagues can also attend the 3 parallel sessions through which we will introduce:

– Moodle Learning Management System
– Panopto Lecture Capture System
– Research supporting environment and High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities

2. ITS Orientation Trails

In addition to the Orientation seminar, Orientation Trails will also be arranged during the first week of the semester (September 2-6, 2013) at the Learning Commons and centrally timetabled classrooms.  The trails will familiarize new University members with the University’s learning environments and give practical demonstrations on the use of the IT/AV facilities. Classroom facilities at the Centennial Campus and Main Campus will be introduced during the orientation trails for staff.

3. Exhibition Booths

A joint exhibition together with the University Libraries will be held in the first two weeks of the first semester.

During the exhibition, there will be display boards showing the core IT services, in particular the support for teaching and learning, and research, in the University.  Staff will be there during designated timeslots to answer questions.

EPSU Seminar: Google Applications for Education (GAFE): Giving Students an e-learning Space

30jul2013_s-268x300Many colleagues will know that Moodle is the University’s Learning Management System of choice. Moodle is a potentially powerful tool for teachers to create rich, rewarding and engaging e-learning experiences. However, Moodle does not do so quite well when we begin to think of students as authors and architects of their learning.

In this seminar we will present Google Applications for Education (GAFE) and discuss the potential of GAFE for giving students spaces engage in learning on their terms and in an environment over which they have control. The seminar will consist of two parts. In part one Iain Doherty will provide an overview of GAFE and present a theoretical perspective on the importance of students having control over their learning. In part two Nicky Ng will provide practical examples of how GAFE might be used in teaching and learning.
